Individual counseling (sometimes called therapy, psychotherapy, or talk therapy) is a process through which individuals work one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in an environment that is safe, caring, confidential, safe, and supportive. Counseling allows people to explore and sometimes challenge their beliefs, feelings and behaviors. It offers an opportunity to work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and their lack of control over others, set personal goals and boundaries, and develop a plan to work toward their desired change.
Therapy focuses on the normal issues that come with the development process for many people – issues where developing simple coping strategies and skills may help resolve the issue before it can become a bigger problem. Individual counseling is an opportunity to gain support and experience growth during the challenging times that life brings. It can help an individual deal with many personal issues and/or concerns such as, anxiety, depression, anger, trauma, stress management, substance use or abuse, marriage and relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes, maintaining a recovery lifestyle, and an overall wellness. Individual counseling with Dan focuses on an individual’s immediate and near future concerns with a variety of counseling techniques that include but is not limited to: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Client Centered Therapy (CCT). Although, counseling theory plays a key role in the counseling process, it is the therapeutic relationship that makes the greatest impact. I don’t want to talk to someone I am uncomfortable with!
Counseling sessions are 45-50 minutes and can be done one of several ways. You can come for an in-person face-to-face session at the office or you can engage in a virtual counseling session online (also called teletherapy or telehealth) using a secure HIPAA compliant portal provided by Caldwell Counseling Center using hosting by Simple Practice. You can do a combination of both if that is what works best for you and your schedule. Once you have made a decision to proceed with therapy at Caldwell Counseling Center, the process to begin is to provide a working email address and phone number. Dan will email you all of the required paperwork to get started through a secure client portal. All of the paperwork is completed electronically so there is no need to download, print/scan, and resend as it will automatically be sent back to Dan. Counseling sessions differ for each individual as some people are seen weekly and others biweekly, monthly, or even multiple times per week. This is determined by you and what you feel best fits your needs. The length of time is determined by your needs as well as long as the process is beneficial, healthy and productive. “Ideally, termination of the counseling relationship occurs when the goals that are mutually agreed upon by the clinician and the client have been achieved, or the problem for which a client has entered into counseling has become more manageable or is resolved” (Syracuse University 2019). I have developed relationships with therapists, doctors, psychiatrist, psychologist, and other professionals that include mental health facilities, substance use treatment centers and sober living facilities. This helps to provide a wide range of treatment options to fit your needs as living a well-balanced life is about holistic treatment. Please contact me directly through email, text or call if you have any questions about Caldwell Counseling Center’s processes or to inquire if therapy is right for you. Please remember, if I am not a good fit for you, I will be happy to connect you with other therapists in the area as I have acquired an extensive network of solid, ethical professionals that are willing to help.
